When San Francisco 49ers owner John York drives down Great
America Parkway to his team's headquarters in Santa Clara, he passes
the theme park, four-star hotels, a sleek convention center -- and
signs advertising acres of prime real estate.
What's unique is that the land under most of that property is
owned by the city of Santa Clara, which has shrewdly managed
investments in about 300 acres north of Highway 101 to revitalize
the area into an entertainment hotspot.
Now, Santa Clara leaders say the 49ers are scoping out some of
the city's land for a development that could help finance a new
stadium and lure the team from San Francisco. That land -- and the
