The quality of this year's wheat harvest was a disappointment to many farmers in Western Kentucky.

Some of the crop suffered from weather- and disease-related problems such as head scab disease and vomitoxin because of the rain and cool temperatures, said Jim Doss, manager of the Hopkinsville Elevator Co., a farmer-owned cooperative of 2,300 members.

"Volume-wise, we're on par with last year," Doss said. "But what we're able to market is down. It all depends on the quality of the wheat."

Pat Covington, of Christian County Grain Inc., said he had harvested two plots of about 143 acres and about 10 percent of his crop was contaminated.
