One day when he was getting ready for spring training, Clint
Barmes got a call from one of his Colorado Rockies teammates.
On the other end of the line was Todd Helton, the Rockies'
unofficial captain and perennial all-star first baseman.
Barmes said the call surprised him.
"Todd's the kind of guy who approaches you; you don't approach
him," the rookie shortstop said with a smile. "I didn't even know he
knew my number."
Helton knew Barmes' number, all right, and he gave him some
friendly advice -- kind of like a guy talking to his kid brother.
"He told me it was time to get it going -- that I'd better come to
camp ready to play," the Vincennes, Ind., native said.
