Article: NEED A BATTING AVERAGE IN A HURRY? IT'S IN THE BOOK

Jammed in among the reference books on my desk at work is a truly ancient volume.

Its title is particularly strange: "Batting and Pitching Averages at a Glance." There's no plot and no narrative, just page after page of numbers listed in vertical and horizontal columns.

It is a book for figuring (almost instantly) baseball batting averages and earned-run averages for pitchers. In the time before hand-held calculators and personal computers, it was a godsend for anyone needing those stats quickly and easily. But you have to go back to 1967. That's when the book was published by The Sporting News, which once called itself "the Bible of Baseball."
