After 53 traditional radiation treatments, chemotherapy and
surgery, Katie Heerdink, 23, had her fourth intensity-modulated
radiation therapy session with the new TomoTherapy Hi-ART system at
St. Mary's Cancer Center last week.
"I feel like I'm actually kind of more hopeful with this therapy
this time as opposed to the other radiation therapy I was getting,"
Heerdink said. "I think it's a lot different, and I think it's a lot
better for patients with cancer the way mine's behaving."
Heerdink, who lives in Princeton, Ind., has been fighting synovial-
cell sarcoma, tumors of the tissue surrounding the joints, for nearly
