Barge building may soon return to Tell City, along with about 150
new jobs.
A group of private investors 1/8 mostly from the Louisville, Ky.,
area 1/8 wants to establish Tell City Marine Contractors, LLC, on the
riverfront site of the former Maxon Marine Industries. Maxon was a
barge-builder that closed in the late 1980s.
The new corporation proposes building basic, heavy-duty barges for
hauling grain, coal and pig iron for industry in North and South
America.
The project would cost between $18 million to $20 million,
according to Greg Wathen executive director of the Perry County
Development Corp.
"Tax phase-in and other incentives from the city and county are
being considered," he said.
