Let's face it.
Saturday's $1 million Florida Derby at Gulfstream for 3-year-olds
going 1C miles was right on line with numerous other preps run for
Kentucky Derby No. 132.
A lot of cash and prestige? Absolutely. Nice useful horses? Sure.
But logic and facts say you haven't seen any second comings of
Seattle Slew or Secretariat. You rarely do.
This year's preps have been downright mediocre.
Four of the past six were won by horses who'd competed previously
in a claiming race. With a City (Turfway Park's Lane's End), Lawyer
Ron (Oaklawn Park's Rebel), Deputy Glitters (Tampa Bay Derby) and
Like Now (Aqueduct's Gotham).
It probably won't happen until the big dance at Churchill Downs.
