Anyone who drives around town this holiday weekend will see crisp American flags hanging off porches, bumper stickers saying "Support Our Troops" and bald eagle decals on pickup truck windows.

The display of patriotism "makes me feel great," said William Barrett, 66, a former Marine and Vietnam veteran.

When Barrett returned to the United States from a tour in Vietnam, he came straight home, avoiding protesters. But his peers who remained in cities such as San Francisco were spit on and called baby killers, Barrett said.

"It was ridiculous the way some of the troops were treated," he said.
