At the height of the Jazz Age, politicians, celebrities and other
well-to-do Americans flocked to the luxurious French Lick Springs
Resort, nestled in the rolling hills of the Hoosier National Forest,
to "take the waters." The natural mineral springs that flow through
French Lick, Ind., were believed to have almost magical healing
qualities that would cure everything from cancer to tuberculosis.
People drank and bathed in the "Pluto Water" as it was called, hoping
to return home with their health restored.
But French Lick was certainly no rest home for the sick and aged.
Young people in perfect health, who drank the water only if it was
