Article: CELL PHONES: GOOD FOR EMERGENCIES, OR JUST PLAIN ANNOYING?

On Nov. 7 the Evansville Courier & Press asked local youths to respond to the topic, "I need a cell phone because a" Ten of the 12 fourth and fifth graders said they needed their own cell phone. Why? The reason listed most often was emergencies.

Yet children who use cell phones to report emergencies while at school often wreak havoc. On a June 3 airing of "20/20," school security expert Kenneth Trump reported that students who have cell phones often became hysterical during emergencies. The result was a flood of parents at the school who blocked life-saving response from fire and police departments.
