Homeowners and small businesses considering a new energy- efficient natural gas furnace or programmable thermostat could get some help with their purchase.

As part of a measure approved by Indiana regulators last week, Vectren Corp. is offering customers rebates on high-efficiency appliances such as water heaters, clothes washers and dryers. The rebates are the result of Vectren gaining approval last week to decouple its natural gas rates.

Historically, Vectren has made more money by selling more natural gas to customers. Under the rate structure approved Friday by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, Vectren's margin will no longer be tied to the volume of gas it sells.
