Airtex Products, the largest employer in Fairfield, has announced
the elimination of its mechanical fuel pump production, resulting in
50 jobs being lost.
"Orders for mechanical fuel pumps have been falling every year,"
said Dee Monge, Airtex president. "It amounts to the buggy whip. The
future lies in the production of electric fuel pumps."
Last week, the company also was evaluating the future of its
distribution center, which could have resulted in the loss of another
70 jobs.
"We believe we can make the distribution center economically
competitive in Fairfield through process improvements and efficiency
