Numbers are significant for the Horsemen's Benevolent and
Protective Association/Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders'
Association's Claiming Crown on Aug. 4 at Ellis Park.
On Wednesday, a total of 86 horses from a record 357 nominations
were pre-entered for the seven C.C. races worth a total of $600,000.
Ellis Park will run five races of its own on Claiming Crown Day,
three before the seven-race series and two afterward. It shapes up as
an afternoon of big fields and tough, competitive races.
Claiming Crown races allow for 14 starters. Ellis Park management
borrowed a 14-stall starting gate from Keeneland. It may be needed
for the $100,000 C.C. Emerald matching 3-year-olds and up on turf ...
