Much about the criminal justice system is out of the control of
the men and women who work that important field of public safety.
Police arrest the people suspected of breaking the law.
Prosecutors prosecute them, and defense attorneys defend them. Judges
guide the process that determines who is guilty and who is innocent,
who should be locked up and who should go free.
And at the bottom of the justice chain there is the county jail,
charged with taking in those suspected of the most serious of crimes,
those who might be a risk to flee, and those who need to be locked
for the safety of society or for their own safety.
