Raise a glass of champagne and toast Ellis Park for last
Saturday's production of the $600,000 Old National Bank Claiming
Crown.
Despite sweltering conditions, for one afternoon the rustic old
track could have been nicknamed "Major League."
The action certainly was.
Ellis Park proved its critics wrong with 6,611 on-track fans
wagering $650,960.
With the popularity and familiarity of Kentucky-based stables,
bettors nationwide fired another $4,255,136 for a record all-sources
Claiming Crown handle of $4,906,096 - the second-largest ever bet on
an Ellis Park card.
Last year's total Claiming crown handle at Canterbury Park was
$2,708,902. Canterbury's all-time best was $3,632,968 in 2004.
