Recognized this summer as one of Ellis Park's premiere riders, the
21-year-old Hernandez is mounting a challenge to front-running
Orlando Mojica for his first ever riding title.
After batting home four winners on Wednesday, Hernandez rode
another on Thursday. He guided the remarkable Golden Hare ($2.60) to
the 8-year-old gelding's 13th victory from his last 14 starts.
With eight programs remaining, Hernandez trails Mojica 43-37. Last
year's EP champion, Miguel Mena, has 34 victories after Thursday's
riding double.
The three-way riding derby figures to tighten over the weekend and
may shape up as one of the meet's best races - human or equine.
