Article: SAVING THE DELTA QUEEN BILL IN CONGRESS WOULD AID STEAMBOAT

A bill in Congress would preserve the Delta Queen steamboat's ability to host overnight cruises with more than 50 guests, which is threatened by other congressional action.

The steamboat, which makes occasional Ohio River stops in the Evansville area, has been exempt for 41 years from federal rules forbidding vessels with mostly wooden structures from hosting overnight cruises with more than 50 guests. The Delta Queen can carry up to 174 people.

But Congress has been unwilling to grant a 10th renewal of the exemption from the 1966 Safety at Sea Act - meaning the 81-year-old Delta Queen, which has a steel hull but a wooden superstructure, could lose the exemption when it next expires in ...
