ELLSWORTH - City leaders voted last week to approve restrictions
on methadone clinics, including a provision that sets a patient
limit at 30, something no other Maine community has done.
Several municipalities in Maine, as well as others nationwide,
have passed moratoriums or implemented zoning amendments to restrict
the dispensing of methadone, a sometimes controversial prescription
drug used to wean opiate addicts.
Ellsworth, however, has taken those local restrictions one step
further, and some are questioning the rationale behind the city's
decision.
