Article: Hundreds of city flats fail new fire safety laws; Licences refused in crackdown on landlords after Evening Times campaign

HUNDREDS of Glasgow landlords have been told their flats are potential fire traps which have failed tough new safety laws.

Almost 400 applications for licences have been lodged and a city council official today revealed almost all had been refused.

The flats failed fire safety standards brought in after the deaths of two 21-year-old students trapped in a blazing west end flat with barred windows.

The new laws followed an Evening Times campaign to crack down on rogue landlords.

Last week alone, six out of eight landlords who applied for a licence were knocked back.

Five of the flats were in the west end, where around 25,000 students seek private accommodation every year.
