Argyll & Clyde Acute Hospitals NHS Trust serves an area of nearly
3000 square miles in the West of Scotland.
Created as a single organisation in April 1999, it covers an area
from Oban to Greenock, which incorporates some of the most
picturesque scenery in Scotland as well as towns with high urban
deprivation, and serves a total population of about 420,000.
The geographical spread also includes 26 inhabited islands.
The trust provides acute health care from four hospitals in the
area: Royal Alexandra Hospital at Paisley, which cares for 30,000 in-
patients, 140,000 out-patients and provides a 24-hour A&E service.
This hospital treats 58,000 patients each year and receives major
