JUSTICE Minister Jim Wallace is under fire after claiming
fingerprint evidence was not an exact science.
His comments were made when challenged by Christine Graham,
convener of the Scottish Parliament's justice committee, on events
since the Shirley McKie case.
Ms McKie, a former Strathclyde police officer, was charged with
perjury on fingerprint evidence in 1998.
She was then cleared of the charge at a trial at the High Court in
Glasgow after American experts said that a fingerprint found at a
murder scene was not hers.
The minister told MSPs that the Crown Office had, for the next
year, independently verified every piece of fingerprint evidence.
