The country's biggest union today warned the Government that plans
to merge emergency control rooms could cost lives.
Unison said it was angry at being "dragged" into the firefighters'
dispute because of the Government's controversial cost-cutting plans.
Tony Blair stepped up the pressure on the striking firefighters by
announcing a review of the way joint control rooms have been operated
by the military during the dispute.
He was said to believe that the centralised control rooms set up
jointly by the military, senior fire officers and the police during
the past week have proved highly successful.
