MORE speed cameras are to be introduced across Britain after a pilot scheme in Glasgow showed that deaths and serious injuries had been cut by two-thirds.

The national project, which was tried out in six areas, showed tragedies caused by speeding had been cut by an average of one- third.

But the most successful pilot scheme was in and around Glasgow where casualties were cut by more than two-thirds.

Extra cameras are now to be introduced to step up speed monitoring and they will be paid for by the cash received from speeding fines.

The Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership today said the new figures proved cameras cut crashes.
