Glenn Poshard's endorsement of Paul Vallas is certain to have a
major effect on the Democratic gubernatorial primary.
Poshard, who nearly won the governorship in 1998, could tilt the
March 19 primary to the former Chicago schools chief.
Former Attorney General Roland W. Burris is leading the Democratic
field in early polls. Vallas and Rep. Rod Blagojevich (D-Chicago) are
tied for second, with about a third of the voters undecided.
Poshard, vice chancellor for administration at Southern Illinois
University, endorsed Vallas because of his strong credentials as an
educator.
