Article: Rapist ex-cop's jail term cut; Conviction for phone call threat quashed

A FORMER police inspector who raped two women - driving one to the brink of suicide - today had a year cut from his jail sentence.

Adam Carruthers, 41, had been jailed for 12 years by a judge who described him as a total disgrace to his uniform.

But at the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh a charge of making a threatening phone call to one of his victims - telling her not to co-operate with the police investigation - was overturned.

However, the shamed ex-policeman abandoned his appeal against the rape convictions.

After a trial in May 2001, Carruthers was found guilty of raping a 38-year-old woman several times between August 1994 and February 1995.
