A timeless world constructed from paper and color, paper dolls--
two dimensional figures drawn or painted on paper and accompanied by
fashion accessories--continue in popularity and collectibility.
Although early forms of dolls created from paper date back to days
before the birth of Christ, paper doll historians mark the origin as
900 A.D. Asia, where a Japanese purification ceremony included
setting adrift at sea a paper figure and folded object that resembled
a kimono.
In the late 1700s, paper dolls surfaced as a means for fashion
merchants to display their wares. On display at the Winterhur Museum
in Delaware is a rare set of hand-painted figures modeling wigs and
headdresses for a Paris ...
