Article: Scots asked to test new sleep drug; Doctors hope to cure insomnia in 5 weeks

DOCTORS have launched a hunt for volunteers from the west of Scotland to test a possible new cure for insomnia.

Sleep-deprived people aged 55 to 80 are needed for trials of the new drug.

Doctors at Clydebank-based Community Phar-macology Services aim to cure up to 30 people with the sleep disorder within five weeks.

Figures show up to 25% of over-55s suffer from insomnia at any one time.

The condition can lead to accidents within the home, drivers falling asleep at the wheel and difficulties in performing everyday tasks.

It is now among the most common health complaint presented to GPs, often leading to psychological distress and depression.
