Article: Spray paint fines alert to city shops; Council crackdown on selling to under-16s

COUNCIL chiefs warned today they are getting tough in a bid to tackle the scourge of graffiti.

They said new laws on the sale of spray paint are to be rigorously enforced in a bid to slash their (pounds) 700,000 annual clean-up costs.

Shopkeepers could now be fined (pounds) 1000 for selling sell the paint to under-16s and could even be forced to stump up (pounds) 500 just for failing to put up a sign telling customers of the new rule.

The tough new legislation is in anti-social behaviour laws introduced on November 5.

Enforcement will be carried out primarily by trading standards officers, although the police also have common law powers.
