Article: Thousands of property owners due refunds

Oops.

It seems 26,210 property owners in Cook County overpaid their taxes last year, putting an extra $40.9 million into the county treasury. That includes $500,000 from one property owner.

Now Treasurer Maria Pappas wants to give it back.

Pappas plans to announce a new program this morning to help property owners find out if they are among those who overpaid their taxes. Property owners can go to her Web site at www.cook countytreasurer.com, enter a 14-digit property identification number and find out if they are due a refund. The county will continue to mail notices to property owners whose taxes were overpaid.
