THERE'S a small, cryptic sticker stuck to a wall in Glasgow's
Union Street, advertising who knows what.
"Desolation . . . Yes!" is all it says.
Somehow it fits in with what many see as a sharp decline in a
street that was once among the most popular and profitable in the
city.
Union Street still has the bustle of traffic it's always had -
3000 buses and 13,850 other vehicles pass down it every day.
But though it takes you only two minutes to walk down it, in the
space of those 120 seconds you'll see at least 15 "to let" or "lease
for sale" signs.
Empty shop units broadcast mute appeals for new buyers:
an old Wimpy bar, the former Hallmark shop, a shop that once went
under the name of Herbal ...
