FIRMS may have to axe staff if they are forced to give workers an
extra eight days off work, Glasgow's business leader said today.
The warning from Lesley Sawers, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber
of Commerce, came after a Labour election promise to ensure every
company paid their workforce for all bank holidays.
Labour's vow comes seven years after legislation was introduced
giving all staff at least 20 days' paid holidays.
But dozens of firms - from caterers to cleaning companies -
currently include the existing eight bank holidays in that
entitlement.
Union leaders say that practice will be outlawed if new
legislation is brought in and would mean workers would get a total of
28 paid ...
