SIR Menzies Campbell signalled he would shift the LibDems to the
right as he backed calls to privatise part of the Royal Mail.
The party's new leader endorsed a plan to sell off 49-per cent of
the Royal Mail, a move which will be seen as a highly symbolic nod to
right-wing modernisers in his party.
Similar plans caused a row at last year's LibDem conference
between the modernisers and those who want the party to remain a
progressive left of centre force.
Delegates refused to endorse the plans then, leading to a watered
down version being put before the party's spring conference in
Harrogate today.
