Article: Campbell backs bid to privatise Royal Mail New LibDem leader's Post Office plan seen as a shift to the right

SIR Menzies Campbell signalled he would shift the LibDems to the right as he backed calls to privatise part of the Royal Mail.

The party's new leader endorsed a plan to sell off 49-per cent of the Royal Mail, a move which will be seen as a highly symbolic nod to right-wing modernisers in his party.

Similar plans caused a row at last year's LibDem conference between the modernisers and those who want the party to remain a progressive left of centre force.

Delegates refused to endorse the plans then, leading to a watered down version being put before the party's spring conference in Harrogate today.
