SCOTTISHPOWER has bowed to pressure and abandoned plans to close its final salary pension scheme to new members.

The utility giant has also scrapped attempts to force thousands of workers already in the scheme to stump up bigger contributions.

Union negotiators are hailing it as a double victory and say the agreement will be an industry benchmark.

The Glasgow-based electricity and gas supplier sparked fury when it announced its controversial plans last month.

Furious union leaders threatened to hold strike ballots over the proposals.

Talks were held before a breakthrough two days ago at a joint summit by five unions.
