Article: Madigan to float bill to cut identity theft Complete credit card numbers would not appear on receipts

A newly proposed state law would require retail merchants and restaurants to partially block out numbers on credit card receipts, preventing the information from possibly falling into the wrong hands.

The bill, which requires all but the last five numbers and the expiration date on credit card receipts to be blocked out, will be introduced Wednesday in Springfield by state Sen. Lisa Madigan (D- Chicago).

Madigan, a Democratic candidate for Illinois attorney general, said she has been a victim of credit card fraud.

She decided to craft the legislation after reading media reports describing how identity thieves use information to steal credit and ruin lives.
