MESA, Ariz.--Cubs hitting coach Jeff Pentland had been giving Corey Patterson his space. But after letting Patterson be his own counsel this spring, Pentland finally tried Tuesday to re-establish a working rapport with the still-developing center fielder.

Patterson has vowed not to listen to everybody who comes along with a suggestion this season. But Pentland's job is to work with players on what he sees, so he and Patterson have been dancing around one another all spring.

"The difference between him and me is that he's 22 and I'm 55," Pentland said. "I have seen thousands of hitters, thousands of ways it's done. In his mind, he probably feels there is one way to do it. There isn't.
