IT'S 60 years since Scotland's first New Town was started. In 1947
it was a village of 2500 souls now it's thriving 74,000strong
community. Today we reveal the story of its birth
SOME see East Kilbride as a daring example of modernist
architecture, worthy of international recognition. Others just see it
as a great place to live, with lots of open spaces and good
facilities.
For visitors it is still nicknamed Polo Mint City in recognition
of the plethora of roundabouts which mark its main roads.
And for the 74,000 people who live there it is simply home.
Local boy, actor John Hannah, once said: "If you cut me in half
you'd see the words East Kilbride written through me like a stick of
rock."
