IT'S 60 years since Scotland's first New Town was started. In 1947 it was a village of 2500 souls now it's thriving 74,000strong community. Today we reveal the story of its birth

SOME see East Kilbride as a daring example of modernist architecture, worthy of international recognition. Others just see it as a great place to live, with lots of open spaces and good facilities.

For visitors it is still nicknamed Polo Mint City in recognition of the plethora of roundabouts which mark its main roads.

And for the 74,000 people who live there it is simply home.

Local boy, actor John Hannah, once said: "If you cut me in half you'd see the words East Kilbride written through me like a stick of rock."
