Remember your living room when you were a child? That was the room your mother told you to never go into or mess up. It was full of fancy lamps, and "precious moments" that were only to be looked at from the hallway. You wondered what that room was for. Well, that mind set actually affected how homes were built in the early '80s.

That was the era when instead of living rooms there were "great rooms" that were these huge multi-purpose rooms that were supposed to change the way homes were built. That trend went on for several years but then homeowners wanted a family room, which was more relaxed and a great place to just hang out, leaving a void for a more formal room-
