Article: Rev. Will Herzfeld, Lutheran Church leader Bridge-builder played key role in creating faith's evangelical organization

He was the first African American to serve as the national leader of a Lutheran church body and a leader in the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He was also well-known for his ecumenical role in building bridges between churches.

Mr. Herzfeld, pastor of the Evangelical Church in America, died Thursday at a Chicago hospital after a sudden attack of cerebral malaria following a trip in Cameroon and the Central African Republic. He was 64.

"He was such an experienced person in the church that he taught a great deal to everyone of what it means to be a Lutheran and a Christian," said John Brooks, spokesman for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
