Article: Support pillars for new bridge go in

The new bridge over the Wairoa River near Brightwater has started to take shape, with the first of the supporting pillars sprouting up from the riverbed.

Four of the nine concrete pillars are in the process of being built, with the rest expected to be completed over the next few months.

Transit New Zealand project manager Gavin Gregg said the pillars in the middle of the riverbed were being built first, so that construction work did not interfere with the fish spawning season starting in May.

He said each pillar was being built on foundations which were sunk 18m into the ground.
