Local marriage celebrants appear to be split over whether to conduct civil unions.

The Department of Internal Affairs has sent out a letter to celebrants asking if they would be interested in also becoming civil union celebrants in the wake of the passing of the controversial legislation which gives gay and same-sex couples an alternative to marriage and removes legal discrimination against those in live in de facto relationships.

Long-standing Northland marriage celebrant, 84-year-old Frank Geddes, has quit his role rather than commit a gay couple to a civil union.

Many of those spoken to by the Nelson Mail were undecided, but others had very clear views on the subject.
