Disorders `plague' region; Eating disorders

Eating disorders are "a plague'' which affects most secondary schools in Nelson and Blenheim, a specialist says.

Dr Geoffrey Buckett, clinical head of the South Island Eating Disorders Service, said many of his patients came from the upper South Island.

Although he has no official figures, Dr Buckett believes Nelson- Marlborough has a higher rate of people with eating disorders than in any other South Island regions.

"It is very unusual for us not to have one or more from Nelson at any one time as inpatients,'' Dr Buckett said.

"It has almost become an in-house joke: we comment to each other, `Did she ever live in Nelson?'.''
