Cold knocks vineyard pest bugs

The cold winter weather may help to hold off the debilitating grape virus leaf roll disease in the Nelson region.

Brightwater Vineyards owner Gary Neale said he expected the mealy bug population to be knocked by the hard winter, which was good news for Nelson grape growers.

Mealy bugs are blamed for transmitting the leaf roll virus three , which has debilitated some Hawke's Bay and Gisborne vineyards.

Nelson Winegrowers committee member Gary Marshall said vines infected by the disease struggled to ripen a crop and develop flavour.
