The Nelson region's two councils will not be following Auckland's hard line on junk mail control.

The Auckland City Council this month passed a bylaw which makes placing unaddressed advertising material in letterboxes marked "No junk mail'' a punishable offence, with fines of up to $5000.

The bylaw also restricts the distributor from placing junk mail in letterboxes that are already full, and from placing advertising material on vehicles in public places.

Nelson City Council administration adviser Richard Palmer said it was not in the council's powers to pass bylaws relating to private property.
