Saving seed good way to save money

Saving seed is one of my favourite pastimes at this time of year.

At least once a week I can be seen peering closely at all sorts of annuals, perennials and herbs in my garden, looking for ripe seeds to collect.

There's no doubt about it, seed collecting takes a lot of patience.

It can be months from the time the bee pollinates a flower to the time the seed is ready to be collected. Ammi majus ; queen anne's lace was in flower in my garden in early December and I harvested the seed in early March.

These days we are often advised to deadhead - remove spent flowers - as this encourages more flowers, ensuring we have a good show in our gardens for a long period of time.
