Article: Time for a new adventure, says principal

After 17 years as Hampden St School principal, Jenny Earle reckons it's time for someone younger to take over the job, yet her parting gift will leave others in the shade.

Next month, at the end of term three, the 56-year-old will step down to work as a statutory manager for the Ministry of Education, helping schools with governance and management problems. She will remain based in Nelson.

To mark the end of her time at the school, with her pupils gathered around, Ms Earle yesterday planted a ginkgo tree in the playground to replace a rotten albizia . Ginkgos are known for their resilience.

She said that in spring the ginkgo would grow leaves to shade pupils from the sun.
