Article: Judicial Conference of the United States votes to ask Congress to create more federal judgeships

The Judicial Conference of the United States earlier this week voted to ask Congress to create 67 new federal judgeships - 15 for the courts of appeals and 52 for the district courts.

Recommended judgeships include a new permanent position for the U.S. District Court, Western District of New York.

Congress has not increased the number of appellate judges since an omnibus judgeship bill was last enacted in 1990. Since then, the number of court of appeals judgeships has remained at 179, despite a rise in federal appellate court case filings of 55 percent through the same 17-year period.
