Article: Humane Society Gets D.C. Shelter Contract

The District has agreed to a multi-year contract worth at least $2.2 million annually with the Washington Humane Society to operate the city's animal shelter, ending a contentious battle that has dragged on for nearly six months.

The contract is for three years with a two-year option. Sources said the contract would increase each year from the $2.2 million but declined to be specific. The Humane Society's previous contract with the District topped out at roughly $1.8 million in its final year.

The deal still requires ratification by the city's chief financial officer and the Office of the Corporation Counsel. But a city spokesman described that process as a formality and predicted that
