San Dimas City Clerk Ina Rios prepared the following history of
the city of San Dimas, a community she said has "a proud past and a
bright future."
San Dimas is a community whose historical roots go deep into the
19th century.
The first Americans arriving in the locality presently known as
San Dimas were a band of explorers headed by Jedediah Strong Smith
who camped at a cienega, later called Mud Springs, in 1826.
A monument on East Arrow Highway marks the approximate location of
that first visit. A bronze statue of Smith stands at the southeast
corner of the San Dimas Civic Center.
In 1837, Spanish dons Ignacio Palomares and Ricardo Vejar came
