Blair Hull, who I do not expect many of you to know--I just met him on Tuesday--is running for the U.S. Senate. We met for lunch in Washington to talk about the 2004 Illinois race, where a stack of Democrats are lining up to knock off Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (R-Ill.).

If you are not familiar with Hull's name, there is a reason. A political donor of modest amounts who at the end of 2001 kicked up his contributions and fund-raising efforts to the mega-level, Hull has never been on a ballot.

He said he never really thought about running for public office until a North Side House seat opened up when Rep. Rod Blagojevich (D- Ill.) decided to run for governor. Hull took a poll and decided that
