Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and the holiest day on the Jewish
calendar, begins at sundown today.
Jews will attend the Kol Nidre or "all vows" service tonight, and
day-long services Saturday.
Yom Kippur is the culmination of 10 days of intense introspection,
known as the Days of Awe, that began at sundown Sept. 12 with Rosh
Hashana, the New Year.
From the New Year to Yom Kippur, Jews look at their life over the
past year and consider how to more closely follow God's commandments.
It is also the time to make amends and seek forgiveness from others.
